The Antagonism is defined through a fire upon a lake image, a conflictive relationship between elements that tend to annul each other. The sign belongs to an energy´s destructive cycle and, when appearing as a hidden or conditioning factor to other experiences reviewed in The Book of Changes, it uses to take also a destructive action on the situation. But its influence varies and brings a lot of nuances, as it will be seen in different reviews in this article.
Stopping. In this situation, what is done in a way is undone in another way. Maybe we develop a kind of thinking that then is annulled by our actions. Maybe we take ahead acts that won´t be sustained by our ideas. I Ching advises to observe what comes in and what goes out (words, actions, feelings) and the result might be a temporary stopping rather than advancing and moving back because of different reasons. If other changes or mutations are not contradictory to it, this time will generate something new by itself.
Signify. As the sign name indicates, the consultant needs to define himself/herself in relation to an action of taming something in the situation. Why? What for? Even when sight is focused on details and small things, a subtle influence or interference may also be part of big internal and/or external conflicts. Although it´s not a high scale experienced situation, this is one of the circumstances that may result extremely annoying to assist while an specila attention is paid to the minimum.
Managing. It´s a situation in which it has to be defined how to manage resources that, in global terms, always tend to drain. There´re no common criteria to determine who, how much and what. We´ll have to expect conflicts at the beginning but tensions will slowly be dissolved until disappear, because if there´re no resources anymore, it won´t be also an object to fight for. This is the intrinsic risk in The Well, a situation that forcibly makes us connected to the context without being advised to take overwhelming actions ahead.
New cycle. Softness is the main quality that ends up annulling contradictions and Kuei´s global influence. There´s a complete turning over in the macrocosmic trend of experiences, which in this hexagram means that tensions and productivity decrease are replaced by a firm and subtle constance that finally defeats any hassle that could have been. In this reading, The Antagonism loses efficacy: they´re its own characteristics that turn to itself and causes its cancellation.
We find The Antagonism as an invisible meaning or hidden conditioning factor in other four experiences in the I Ching: The Wait (Hsü – 5), The Taming Force of the Small (Hsiao Ch´u – 9), The Well (Ching – 48) and The Penetrating (Sun – 57). Its influence varies a lot, and the consultant must observe very carefully how it is that certain action itself, a person, a detail or an experience´s quality may have dissimilar effects in different areas (personal, social, familiar, labour …). Understanding Kuei´s influence in a specific way seems not to be the most adequated: it´s necessary to redouble the same quality to turn it against itself, such as The Penetrating experience indicates.
