Before Consummation is an unordered order sign, creative chaos in which nothing is still defined as a developed form. The situation has all the necessary elements or ingredients for a later fructification but they´re not yet indicated the ways, goals or plans. Thus, I Ching suggests stopping the action and not hurrying movements until things could be better defined in the future.
Also we have to bear in mind that is a potentially productive situation: nothing is missed, we effectively count on what we need and this is a characteristic that shouldn´t be discarded. The only inconvenience is that it´s not time to use our tools and put them into function because we would lack a defined purpose to direct our activity. There´s chaos, not lack. It´s a preliminar impasse, not confusion.
In the microcosmic lineal sequence, it will come The Creative (Hexagram 1) in which active force and directed movement will be present. But in the macrocosmic sequence of hidden meanings, Wei Chi indicates underlying characteristics that are not directly seen. Before Consummation influences differently according to the situation we got in a reading:
Reaction. Wei Chi´s chaos can bring risks and we have to find trustful and mutual responsibility bonds, looking for an organization opposite enough to that disorder with freedom reminiscences. It´s a reactive behaviour, maybe a little bit defensive because of the uncertainty that Wei Chi carries. In these compromised bonds in the reading, there´s a disorganization background that constantly threatens to undermine our closest relationships structure, it doesnt´ matter the context involved (familiar, social, labour …).
Review. There´s a hidden factor that blocks projecting into the future. Movement from chaos towards order is blocked, it´s not easy to advance and there´s a situation that has to be corrected to find fluidity. Things block tracing a plan, so we´ll have to look back to find the right causes for current doubts, wounds, obstacles or any other circumstance that had diminished our skills or projects. It may also happen that our advancing impulse makes us move out of place and time and thus walking is difficult. Anyway, I Ching´s recommendation is the same: review the conditions from which we started to evaluate again if it´s better to remain expecting, waiting for things to be reordered, or continuing moving without finding an adequate space to unfold.
New scale. In this situation we got in a reading, Wei Chi expresses all the creative potential inside the chaos, in times when nothing is defined and in which it´s not yet convenient tracing final plans. Wei Chi as inner hexagram indicates mental openness, empty and energetic availability to take a big step, make an insight, change tune and definitely left behind ancient regimes, caducous orders and perished forms. Experience within, as does not happen with The Impediment, is creative and free of conditionings, so we don´t need to review basal conditions but is advisable to prescind of them and reach transcendental forms and objectives, that is, looking forward to freely reorder elements according to a new logic in the developed thinking.
In these three situations related to Before Consummation (Chia Jen – 37 or The Family, Chien – 39 or The Impediment, Chien – 53 or The Evolution) we can observe different positions to assume facing disorder and the absence of concrete projections: agglutinating and compromising, trying a blind and unfruitful advance, creating in the empty and get over the past …
It´s worth mentioning that Wei Chi´s inner hexagram is Chi Chi (63, After Consummation) and this reference repeats itself as a loop, since Chi Chi´s inner sign is Wei Chi. Order and disorder, as The Creative (1) and The Receptive (2), are the two sides of the same coin. Differently to these two lasts, Wei Chi and Chi Chi are not structuring principles but they do can be considered as their final products after we´ve experienced changes that luck may bring. That´s why it is said that forces (yin, yang) tend towards order (63) and chaos (64) and that, in between, they´re all energy´s possible manifestations.
